The view out of my upstairs window this morning. A typical Southern California view (well, one at 6,000 feet elevation in November):

Great shots! I like the second most with the dark blue sky. Try to stay warm

We get rain down here at the coast, while you get snow up there. Welcome to Southern California.

Wow - you have more snow than we do in Toronto!! Beautiful scenes, I especially like the second one :-)

Good heavens - more snow than Toronto?! That's amazing. Of course, our snow is very civilized - it falls, looks beautiful and then melts. Never outstays it's welcome. I'm now looking at brown hillsides, where this morning they were white.
Walter - we started out to go to the LA Auto Show yesterday morning. The rain and fog coming down the mountain was horrible and the number of accidents between the bottom of the Grapevine and downtown was daunting - it would have taken hours to get there. So we went to a grocery store and struggled back up the hill, not exactly an exciting Saturday. Disappointing because we're going out of town for Thanksgiving and won't have a chance to go this year. |

Thanks for sharing your 'neck of the woods' Mtngal - even with the interesting combination of Californian geography and snow! I can imagine, at 6000ft (about 2km) - that 'deserves' some snow!
I also like the light dusting of snow in the 2nd photo and the dark blue sky behind it. Cheers Paul |

Great picks, specially #2. ND filter there?

Yes, both are good, but I also pick #2 for the contrast of the sky and hillside.

No ND or CP filter (CP would have been a nice idea, didn't think about it). Just the light was bright on the fresh snow and it wasn't nearly as clear as it looks in the first picture - there was quite a bit of clouds still around. You can see some of the mountain fog/clouds in the second one. Also, the sun angle was pretty low - I'm really shooting into the sun in the first one (but I wanted to get the shadow effect to accentuate the terrain along with the long shadows and soft, barely direct light). The second one is taken in almost the opposite direction and the sun is full on the hillside.
In the summer the view isn't half as spectacular - the trees are pines, the rest chaparral. However, the normally much lower temperatures at this elevation are a very welcome relief. |
