Steve, there is a little gadget that might help you, if you can find one. It is a small spirit level the clips into the hot shoe on top of your camera. The one I have is just a little larger than a sugar cube. It is made of acrylic and viewable from all sides. It can attach to the hot shoe in two different positions. They cost just a few dollars at your local camera store.
