I have posted this before but I think it is a good one for this challenge.

Before I-84 was built along the south side of the Columbia River Gorge, the only road on the south side was the old historic Columbia River Highway. It was only two-lane and very windy in spots. Between the towns of Mosier and Hood River, the road passed through three closely spaced tunnels. After the Interstate opened up, one or more of the tunnels collapsed and this section of the road was closed to all traffic. The tunnels were filled in and blocked.

About ten years ago, the tunnels were cleaned out and new shoring installed to prevent future cave-ins. When the work was completed, this section of the highway was reopened to pedestrian and bicycle traffic only. It is a beautiful hike with some fantastic views of the Gorge.

On the west end of the tunnels there is a concrete snowshed to keep snow and avalanches from falling on the road. This is a shot looking into the snowshed from the west. The Columbia River is to the left from this shot.

Wonderful play with light and shadow. Too bad that person walked into the shot.
