On this Memorial Day 2008 I decided to go out and brave the weather and crowds to see the Memorial Day Service at Punchbowl the National Veterans Cemetery. Here are a few shots which also hopefully exemplify the challenge.

In addition to the laying of flags on each gravesite flowers leis are also draped to give the ceremony a "Hawaii" mark of distinction.

The first shot shows the marble, cement and steel that forms a part of this National Monument.

The scond shot is more traditional and rather than show the dignataries etc, I thought the focus should be on the graves of the soldiers,

I apologize for including a third shot but this could easily not be considered a challenge entry. Off to the side were these rubber slippahs in formation beneath one of the marble slabs. Note the wording. I don't know if this was planned but it strikes a chord:

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
John McCrae (1872-1918)

Very nice Selvin. I particularly like your third photo with Flanders Field attached. Its been a while since I thought of that poem. As a kid I had to memorize it in school. Ive never forgot it.

Very nice. Apt for Memorial Day. A reminder that it is not just a long weekend.
