An archive shot that I took back in 2006. I had an almost new camera (this was my shot 169) and a manual focus lens. Taken one morning while hiking on a SoCal mountain, about 7,000 feet elevation. I got lucky, I've never managed to capture anything like that again, though I have hiked over the same area often.
![]() This is probably my best shot of the moon, and it was incidental to my original subject, the plane. |

Spectacular and well captured. Once in a lifetime opportunity.

Very cool. We had another member post something similar a few years back but unlike yours that one was faked to get this result. It's much better to get an original like you!!!

While this shot would be relatively easy to fake, I find doing that type of thing very difficult to really pull off. It's always the little things that would give it away, like where the light was coming on both objects, and I don't have the patience to for really extreme type of graphic stuff. I'm not unwilling to take a couple of shots and merge them (like the Los Angeles Times photographer did that got him in such hot water) if it all matches quickly. I have a nice picture where I took an HDR version of a picture, then took part of one of the frames and another shot that wasn't part of the HDR for another part of it to match in one part of the frame, but all I did was match lines and use adjustment layers to match the exposure values - all pretty quick and since it was one scene taken at the same time, I didn't have a problem with lines and sizes matching. But I normally think that the results are better when I've got it right in-camera/the first time.

Yes, it frustrates me when people fake something and don't mention it in the info.

This is a spectacular shot! One wonders how the moon was captured so large with the plane so small? It almost looks like shot taken when the moon was at perigee a couple of weeks ago. Weather prevented me from seeing that but there is a beautiful shot on the NASA website.

Cal - And here I was amazed that the plane was so big since normally I see planes in this location that are barely dots in the sky (part of the reason why I haven't been able to take a similar picture). It could have been when the moon was closer than normal, but I don't pay attention much to such things and wouldn't have known. I did crop significantly, this is almost a 100% crop from a 10 mp camera. It was also taken in December, when the air is normally much clearer and at high enough that the air is thinner - reason why things were unusually sharp probably.

Beautifully done....the timing was lucky but you obviously knew what you were doing to get the great image.
