Making Music: The Ukulele or "Jumping Flea"

THe Ukulele derives from a modifed Portuguese "machete" stringed instrument which early Portuguese settlers in Hawaii designed and used because of its relative simplicity and low cost.

This is an archival shot of an Ukulele . The term is from the Hawaiian meaning "jumping flea," which is the name given to it by Queen Liliuokalani because of the action of the fingers while playing.
