Capturing birds can be tricky, but with some patience they can be extremely photogenic. Even though July and August can be tough months because the birds are molting and don't look their best, they are also introducing their young to the habitat around them. That, in itself, can be incredibly fun to watch.
There are many "how to" sites listed on google which are worth a few minutes reading time. These include tips on equipment, lighting and capturing birds in flight.
One particularly good one is The Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Several wonderful essays.
