Default New Challenge - Mar 9 to Mar22 -- Light a Candle

As the title implies, this challenge is about candles and candlelight. There are two different ideas for you to try out.

First, create an artistic setting containing one or more lit candles. This can be with candles alone or with the incorporation of other elements such as flowers or other household objects.

Second, (more difficult) create an image using only the light of one candle. This will have to be done at night or in a darkened room. A tripod is a must. Experiment with white balance. The light of a burning candle is warm and can be beautiful source of illumination. Try different WB settings.

There are many variations or combinations of the above ideas that can be tried. Specialty filters such as a star filter or softening filter can be used. Put your creative juices to work and show us what you come up with.

Since this challenge involves burning candles, I would like to quote the warnings printed on the bottom of many candles:
  • Burn candles in sight of someone--never leave a burning candle alone.
  • Keep burning candles away from flammable materials.
  • Keep burning candles away from children and pets.
There are other warnings on most candles but they deal mostly with minimizing smoke and soot.

I hope everyone has fun with this one and I look forward to your photos. For ideas, Google "burning candles" and click on the item that says something like "burning candle images". You will find hundreds of photos.
