HVDC power line Point A is in Quebec, Point B is in Connecticut. This section is in northern Vermont, looking toward Quebec.

Please clarify. HVDC?? Is that High Voltage Direct Current? I don't think so. Direct current cannot be transmitted long distances due to high loss.

Yes, it is Direct Current. For long distance transmission, the inductive and capacitive losses of AC are greater. The voltage is on the order of 750KV to 1MV.
There is another, similar line being planned for New Hampshire, which would run through some prime recreational lands, with even taller towers and higher capacity. Residents are banding together to fight the project, called Northern Pass Transmission. A pity we are so dependent on electricity, and continue to use so much more of it all the time. brian |
