I keep coming back to this image and I seem to notice something new each time. Ellis island is mostly colorless while the NYC skyline is full of color. Is that something you did post processing or the way the image came out of the camera?
It really makes the image that much more powerful. |

Thanks for coming back and noticing. I purposely removed the color out of the interior and the exterior of Ellis Island wanting to emphasize the differences between the "Old World" that the immigrants were leaving and the colorful "New World" they were about to enter. Zig

A very moving image. Having spent time in various parts of the world, I have come to appreciate how others view the US, and this captures the sentiment well.

Hi Brian,
Thank you for taking the time to look and to comment. It is very much appreciated................ To all the folks who took the time to comment. Thank you all very much. When I first posted this image, I really didn't think it would be so well received so many people. zig

Well done zig
Certainly a moving perspective - and a very well portrayed 'story' through it. Your explanation helps give the photo history and place. I like the desaturation / colour idea (generally I don't like that, but for me, this one definitely works). My grandparents came out with their family of 9 many many years ago to Australia (from the Netherlands). My father was just a child - like you. Perhaps a different story and history, but a journey with similarities too, I'm sure (and many more kilometres of travel!) Cheers. Thanks for sharing - and again, well done! Paul |
