The lobster pots are, once more, stacked up alongside the piers, as the lobster-season (October 1st until November 30st) draws to an end her in these parts of the world. This years lobster harvest has been extremely good, so the salty dogs say - mind you, never trust a fisherman for what he tells you....

Not really.
Not here in the south of Norway, anyway. Up in the North they have had snow since the end of October, but hereabouts where I live, its mostly wet, wet, wet in November. The snow-season starts usually in December. |

Sit on the doc (...of the bay...Otis Redding) and drink beer!
Nah, just kidding you, Walter. Those with pot-handling gear (hydraulic pot-pullers) go on to fish cray-fish (I think you call them) because the cray-fish-season lasts all year (because ther is more of it). You need hydraulic pulling-gear because the crayfish-pots are set much deeper (200') and therefor harder to pull, while the lobster-pots are set more shallow, mostly around 60' ![]() http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norway_lobster Don't know what you call them. Get up to 10-12". Also called Dublin Bay prawn, langoustine or scampi. Anyway, those without hydraulic gear go on with herring- cod- and other fish-types, cought in nets. ![]() Last edited by Walter_S; Nov 22, 2009 at 2:16 PM. |

You must have a healthier lobster-population in Sweden!
Here the season used to be 3 months (October, November and December) before, but last year there were restrictions with an increased minimum-length of the lobsters (25cm now instead of 24cm), no take of female lobsters and some changes of the construction of the pots as well (bigger escape-holes, etc.), all because of the decline in lobster-population over the last decade. On top of that the new regulation allows common people (not registered fishermen) the use of only 10 pots per boat, as opposed to 20 pots before. Sadly there has been a lot of looting (?) and abuse of existing regulations, because of the high prices fetched in the consumer-marked (special restaurants), with a feared demice of the lobsters in the south of Norway. Lets hope that the lobster-population will regain its former strength! |
