My first thought was not they were cartoonish but rather plastic toys! It is interesting that they would stain or paint the wheels and supports in that garish color. Is there something historic about the color?

The bright orange color of the wheels gave me the feeling of early morning, just before the battles rush.

The "garish" (don't even know what that means... ![]() In those days, the most common paint-colors where earthen colors (produced from sediments found here) like oker (a greenish earthen yellow) and this oxide-red. The cannons are in fact painted in oxide-red, but tinted slightly by the rising sun. Well, Chato - if you get up early enough, one get's to see this orange tint quite often, its called a SUNRISE! ![]() You are perfectly right - it was early in the morning! As you can see: ... |

No, Dave - its the other way round. The reflection is that of the morning-sun. Check out the trunk on that birch-tree - same colors there, and in some of the clouds.
It had been a very cold night, so the cannon-barrels where actually freezing cold, I guess with frost from the humid air. That caused the reflections. ![]() This is the colors of the cannons in daylight - so you see they are more red (oxide-red) than orange - it's the morning sun playing tricks with you....
