Although the focal point is different between the two photos, it is not obvious. I think your depth of field is a bit too much.

Ha, I had to laugh when I saw these photos. I thought to myself "Walter and his pier"... You certainly have a lot of photos of that pier, seems like it must be the view from your front garden!! :G I can see the difference in focus between these photos- it seems you have not selected settings to create a very narrow dof.
