The center coin is the only one in focus. This is shot with my S700 with #3, #2 and #1 Close-up filters attached. No monkeying with pic, just resized to fit.

Well, that proves to Vanessa that it can be done. I would estimate that your DOF is only about 1/8 inch. I am going to try something similar only by using extension tubes on the base of the lens. It achieves the same goal but maintains optical quality of the lens in use.

Cal, I dont follow your comment about maintaining image quality of lens used if you use extension tube instead of close-up filters. I cant image the image being any sharper no matter what equipment was used. Can you clarify this?

I think you may have set the gold standard. About 1/8th of an inch is about as shallow as one can get with standard photographic equipment.

Well, Bynx, I have always assumed that any kind of "filter" containing a lens or lens elements when attached to the front of a lens would degrade the quality of image that the lens can produce. The addon lenses are not made to the same optical standard as the camera lens and they do not match up to the camera lens the same as the internal lens elements.

Your photo is certainly very sharp in the center but, if you go for maximum DOF by closing down the aperture to minimum, how do those closeup lenses perform. Are the edges as sharp as the center. Is there any distortion of any kind that was not present in the camera lens by itself.

As for the use of extension tubes, no optical elements are added to the camera lens. The extension tube simply moves the lens farther from the sensor. This has no effect on optical quality and does not result in loss of light.

I am no expert by any means. I am just stating theory based on things that I have read.
