Because it's the middle of soccer season, I haven't had a chance to get out in Hot Springs to take photos for this challenge until today. Knowing the next couple of weeks are going to be as hectic as the last two have been, I took advantage of a beautiful, cool day to play tourist in my hometown in the Ouachita Mountains (pronounced Wash-i-taw).
I thought a good place to start would be above the town at the Hot Springs Mountain tower, a 216 foot high structure at the peak of Hot Springs Mountain. Since 1877, there has been an observation tower at the top of the mountain. The latest version opened to the public in 1990 ![]() The city's Tourism Board claims a view "encompassing 140 miles." I'm not so sure about that, but the tower does give a unique perspective on the central downtown area, snuggled into one of America's oldest national parks. ![]() The building with the orange roof tiles is the historic Arlington Hotel, the subject of my next post. Very beautiful pictures. I love the town nestled in the valley between the mountains. Very peaceful and serene.

Paul,
Wow, what a view from that tower. That's a unique way of getting the town some attention. Your shots are very sharp. Aloha |

Nicely done, Paul. If I ever get back your way, I must climb up that tower.
There is a place in Astoria, Oregon at the mouth of the Columbia River, called the Astor Column. If you can handle the mammoth spiral staircase (about 250 steps, I think) you get a spectacular view in all directions including the Pacific Ocean, the Columbia River and many other lakes, etc. in between.
