Here, in the city were I live, we have a glorious city Park of 3600 acres. Near the down town area is a city pool. This pool is unique because it was build in the middle of a creek that runs through the city. It is the destination for weary, sun drenched citizens on days like today were the temperature reached 102°F. The pool starts out 2 feet in depth and runs to about 6 feet near the dam. In this picture the dam is just behind me.

Here is the dam and the bridge that allows passage from one side of the pool to the other. Once a week the dam is deflated allowing the pool to be drained for cleaning. Water from the creek is diverted underground to allow for the cleaning.

This shot was taken from the middle of the bridge above the dam. The pool is open and filled from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This is also were they hold the January 1st Polar Bear swim each year. The water temps are in the low 50's. Brrrrrrr.

I really like the second shot. There's a lot of visual interest.

What an unusual but totally great swimming area. I love how the city used it's natural resources. Thanks for the great explanation of the inside workings.

That looks pretty refreshing especially this hot summer. That's a pretty large park. Thanks for submitting. Selvin |

Thank you everyone. Selvin, it is a large park and much of it is undeveloped and in it's natural state. Being left in its natural state was a condition of the founding family that donated the land for Bidwell Park back in the late 1800's around the time of the California gold rush. Gen. John and Annie Bidwell were the founder's of Chico, CA. I spent many hot, summer days swimming there growing up.
This is a shot of the Upper Park area.Everything you can see is part of the park. This is the same creek as it runs through a canyon carved out of hardened mud flow. You can see some parked cars at another, undeveloped, swimming place called "Bare Hole". Probably named for the general lack of clothing on some bathers. ![]()

Love these pictures. The last one is especially interesting to me - your hills are quite a bit greener than it is a few hundred miles south.
