This shrine will mean more to British outdoor persons than to the rest of the world, but I hope the subtext is apparent from the image.
The English Lake District's scenery inspired the great flowering of 19th Century English literature, notably of Wordsworth & friends, and it's still England's prime tourist destination. Alfred Wainwright (1907-1991) was Borough Treasurer of a Lakeland Town, and over the period 1955-66 he wrote these definitive, enormously best-selling walker's guides to all the hundreds of hills. They're beautifully hand-crafted with pen & ink drawings, mapsand text, as you can see on the book cover and bottle label. I acquired the bottle and drank its contents on my recent last birthday, and the empty sits by my computer as an ornament. He was very reclusive, but to his millions of followers' delight, he surfaced, very old,in a few much-repeatedTV programmes, inspiring lots more about his routes, and the beginnings of anupdated edition in the same style. |

Alan, nicely arranged, composed and photographed. And thanks for the background material.

Thanks, Walter. That's my lot for this challenge, as I'm away for a bit.

I like the elements of the image Alan, but Im not easy with the way the books are sitting. I seem to see them as lying flat with the spines readable and the top book in a similar position you have now but propped up by the stack of books behind it. Id also like to see the bottle closer to the mug instead of hugging the books. As usual, Im taken by your attached story. I hope your being away for a bit is on a good note and something you are looking forward to. When you get back perhaps you can share it in pics.

This comes very close to my (classical) idea of a still life. The background is dark so it doesn't participate in the photo. Good work.
