The incredibly popular Hanauma Bay on the East side of Oahu has a long and storied history. Early accounts note that Hawaiian Royalty started visiting it in the early 1800s. By mid 1800s it was the playground of the Royalty and a favorite fishing spot.
In the early 1900s the land is deeded to the last reigning Hawaiian Monarch, Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Evetually it is given back to the County in 1928. World War II impacts the area with hidden bunkers built nearby to stave off the Japanese invasion that never came. The 1950s sees more change in the Bay, swimming spots are dredged by the county, the telephone company is allowed to dynamite a path thru the coral to install the first transpacific telephone cable from California (Unthinkable in today's world). Food Concession stand, a shuttle bus etc. begins to appear, fish feeding is allowed. In the new era, the concession stand is gone, fish feeding is no longer allowed, and the Bay is a classic stopover for all to enjoy. It is certainly one of the most picturesque places in the world. Note the early 1900s photo and the more recent shot. No big parking lot, a dirt path down to the beach, no buildings. etc. ![]() ![]() Finally a different angle stitched together from 5-shots. ![]() |

Beautiful shots. I'm glad they kept the area natural. No hotels and fast food places.

This looks like such a lovely spot. Nice they went back to the naturalness (is there such a word) of the area.

Nice shots, Selvin. I love your stitchery in the third. Do you help your wife with her stitchery, also? Did we see this bay when you and your wife showed us around the island? It is a beautiful spot.

NhMom et al,
I think the vast majority of locals prefer the "naturalness" of the area now. It does signifcantly cut back on the number of possible visitors but preserves the park for future generations. Cal, Yes, we did make a quick stop here, (September, 2005) please see below. ![]() |

Ohmygod!! Quick, Selvin. Delete that photo before anyone else see it, especially my wife (the young lady on the right).:G:G:G Talk about those tourists from the mainland.
BTW, my wife has an account on here and has posted one photo a few months back. I am not going to mention her screen name. |
