On May 23rd 1960 a Tsunami (tidal wave) struck the town of Hilo and the community of Waiakea in Hawaii destroying much of the dowtown area including a community clock that was donated by a local school principal.
As the old song goes, "But it stopped short Never to go again, When the old man died." The hands on the Wakefield clock stopped at 1:05pm, May 23, 1960 the moment the Tsunami struck. A replacement clock honoring the moment stands in its place a tribute to the strength, courage and resilence of the people of Waiakea which bore the brunt of the Tsunami. The replacement clock has its hands frozen at 1:05pm. This post has three photos, please let me know if I should remove one. I thought it might be okay since the opening sign isn't really a timepiece. ![]() The clock, ![]() Some historical photos of the tsunami. ![]() |

Nice work, Selvin. Thanks for the historical information. These narratives always add a great deal to the photos. Who are the people standing next to the clock?

Cal,
Thanks for your comments. The lady on the left is my wife Frances, and the fellow on the right is my son, Christopher. Aloha |

On its own, the clock is an interesting photo. With the context, it's really special. Thanks for including the story.

A sad story. Nice that someone thought to remember it that way.

This is a very interesting and poignant post. It was great the you included the information and photos that went along with the photo of the clock.
I have to say your wife and son are a very handsome couple. |
