In the Gastown district of Vancouver, B.C. in the midst of quaint boutiques, shops, and restaurants sits this operating steam driven clock. Gastown is located a few blocks East of the central business district of Vancouver and just a few blocks from the waterfront to the North.
These are scanned 35mm slides taken about ten years ago. The first shot is a bit busy. I hadn't learned the KISS (Keep it simple, stupid) rule, yet! I was trying to get the clock, the large tree in the background, and the light poll. You can see steam coming out of the top of the clock. ![]() The second shot shows a bronze plaque at the base of the clock. ![]() Cal |

When your post said Steam Clock my first thought was Gastown. Everyone who visits Vancouver stops by the clock. Thanks for the memories.

Cal, a beautiful clock, and fascinating story. When I read the challenge, I immediately began thinking of clocks powered in unusual fashion, but I never thought even for a moment about one driven by steam. Thanks for the pic and story.

I have seen that clock. I think that you captured it quite nicely.

I noticed that Raymond L. Saunders is a horologist. I thought a horologist was a woman of the evening who rented out by the hour. I guess it must refer to anyone who deals in time.

I think you've got your spelling wrong, Bynx. The name of the "trade" you refer to starts with a "w"!
According to Webster's American Dictionary--College edition: horologist: 1. an expert in horology 2. a person who makes clocks or watches. horology: the art of making time pieces or of measuring time. Cal |
