This challenge is perfect for me, as I am hesitant to approach people to take their picture. Forces me to try to be more outgoing in those situations. Rather than set up a studio type shot, I went down to the pier for some "street photography" type portraits.
This first one is a lady who was talking to a friend when I got up the courage to approach her. I thought her red outfit and grey hat would make a good portrait. Probably in her 60's, so that should qualify as "old", eh? Canon 5D Mk II, EF 24-70 2.8L |

I also posed her in front of a plaque of donors and politicians when the pier was rebuilt. Didn't use a flash on this shot. I wanted to show her entire red outfit as well as some of the pier plaque.

Walter,
Charming lady. Quite helpful too based on your narration. My rathers, the shadow behind her and of course the shadow of the hat in the first shot. Maye be some fill in flash might have helped but these sometimes tend to create a very harsh lighting effect. The second shot was a much better rendition since it eliminated the back shadow but still unfortunately has the hat shadow. Aloha |

Actually, I did use fill-flash in that first shot, which provided details in the shadow under her hat. Here is another shot of her without the use of a flash (on left). On the right, I applied a strong amount of "Shadows/Hightlights" in Photoshop to open up the shadow. |
