Default Zoom or Walk - Rock 'Portal'

This is definitely one of the most interesting - and eye-opening - Biweekly shootout challenges in some time.

This 'portal', if I can call it that, is a rock sculpture in front of the Vernon And District Performing Arts Centre. These shots aren't the best quality because I was more or less shooting into the setting sun, but you get the idea.

This is the first one, taken about 100 feet away at a zoom setting of 170mm. There's a small tree in the foreground and what looks like a solid wall of trees behind.

Shot number two, taken from less than fifty feet away, zoom setting 95mm. The tree in the foreground is gone and the wall of trees behind has opened.

The last one, taken from just a few feet away at 25mm. The trees are much less prominent and even appear to have moved.

OK, so I didn't follow Cal's rules to the letter. But rules are meant to be broken, right?
Fujifilm FinePix HS10, Fujifilm FinePix HS20 EXR, Pentax E-80 P&S, Sunpak auto383 flash, Optex slave flash, Velbon VGB3 heavy-metal tripod, TechPro TP-242 tripod with B62 ballhead, assorted filters and other bits.

This set of photos does not illustrate the purpose of this challenge. We are not looking for the distortion effects of wide angle lenses. This is about illustrating how walking toward a subject allows previously hidden objects to be seen. Zooming does not accomplish this. Please reread the challenge description. It was modified/clarified a couple days ago.
