Thankfully, most of us take food for granted. Whatever we're in the mood for, it's there for us -- in the fridge, at the drive-thru or at our favorite restaurants. But, sometimes we're stopped short by a disturbing scene that reminds us of what some of our fellow citizens must resort to to find nourishment.

I was strolling down Santa Monica's Third Street Prominade not to long ago -- a busy upscale shopping area -- when I came upon this fellow bent over a trash receptacle. He was searching for food! A couple of blocks over, in a park on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, there are hundreds of homeless people sleeping in the shadows of million dollar high rise condominiums.

As photographers, we have trained our minds and our eyes to spot interesting contrasts, albeit sometimes with sadness.

Yes, as much we would like to ignore the existence of these deficiencies in our society they should demand more attention than they presently get.

Nice candid.

As disturbing as that photo might be to some, it has a lot to say about our society. If things worked the way they're supposed to, we wouldn't have this problem.

This is an excellent journalism photo.
