Here is what I believe is called a Zen garden. It is located in the Portland Japanese Gardens. It is a very peaceful location. Different patterns are raked into the white gravel each day and the patterns have meaning to those who understand it. I am not one of those.

Unlike grass lawns the periodic raking allows the creation of new patterns and gives the rock gardens an added dimension lacking in "fixed" gardens.

Supposedly the raked patterns sometimes repreesent waves and the green surrounding the larger rocks of course heighten the feeling of ilands in the ocean. That's about all the knowlegde I have of these things.

Just curious, but thegarden seems to take the limelight with the fence around it entirely secondary.
