This city in Croatia is completely surrounded by walls. It was frequently attacked due to its strategic location...both from land and sea. The Romans occupied the city for quite some time and introduced an aquaduct system for bringing in water.

As I recall, the exterior walls are about 16 ft. thick.

The appearanceprojects formidable. I guess the Roamns were successful in deterring invading armies.

Excellent shots, Walter! My great great grandmother was born in Slovakia and lived in Croatia before coming to the United States. I've always wanted to visit there and your photos make me want to do so even more. I'm told it's a beautiful country.

Indeed, it is a beautiful country with such a rich and storied history. Two days there was not nearly enough. I'd like to return for a longer stay. |
