It was rainy, foggy and cold as I crossed into Eastern Tennessee from North Carolina this past Sunday morning. Even a light snow as I reached to top of one mountain. So, not a good day for photography. But, I spotted a train display at an intersection in Carter County, Tennessee and just had to stop despite the steady rain. The narrow fencing around the train also made getting a good perspective quite difficult, even with the 16-35 lens on a full frame 5D.
This is a North American Rayon Steam Engine (1936-1992), which is thought to be the last steam engine that was in commercial use in the USA. Not as big an impressive as those posted earlier by Cal and others, but nicely maintained. |

Very unusual locomotive, that's for sure. You are constantly on alert, Walter. Great capture!

I had to study the photo for a bit to determine if this was a real locomotive or a kids toy. Looking at the wheels and the valve gear, it looks authentic per Walter's description. I have seen green locomotives before but none with a smooth nose like this one.
Good work, Walter. Cal |
