tulips at a local botanical garden... in this case, the overcast sky played to my advantage... in sunlight, these would have been far too brilliant and intense, and would probably have oversaturated completely!

I think you're right. If the sun were shining brightly, you'd have a blob of red unless you sed the camera for reduced saturation.
