This is a picture of Leamaneh Castle located in the Burren in county Clare, Ireland. The tower on the right was erected around 1480 by the O'Brien clan (the first kings of Ireland). The main house was erected in the 1640's. The Burren is a rocky, windswept area that is eerily beautiful. Many of the earlier castles were built as fortified towers similar to the one on the right. The windows were narrow to lessen intrusion by invaders. This tower has a "murder hole" above the tower entrance (not in this picture). It was used to pour burning oil, rocks or other deterants on any who attacked.

Neat pic....is the inside completely void of structure now?
Are the line of rocks in the foreground the remnants of a wall, or moat, that surrounded the main building? |
