My 13 year old daughter plays ice hockey so we head over to Providence College quite often to see the Lady Friars play.

The first image is thepainting ofthe ice at the beginning of the season. There was a fog in the arena which was you can see.

The second is the Lady Friars before a game.

Good one Vich. Nice followup to my Zamboni post.

Bynx, I have been waiting to see if someone would post some rink pictures, but no one did, so i posted these. Rink shots are so difficult because of the lighting, white balance, and moving targets...LOL

Really cool images...I didn't know they actually painted the ice these days. I figured they used decals and then covered them with ice. But what do I know...I don't frequent the ice rinks much.

Most informative. I also didn't realize they painted the rink.

As Bynx said good follow-up to his Zamboni shot.

SB, I thought the same thing. I don't think decals would hold up. I always thought they used large plastic sheets with the patterns painted or printed on them and then froze a layer of ice over the top.

Maybe somebody will prove us wrong...

They hand paintedthe iceand then ran the zamboni over it for a few days and then the ice was good to go. We enjoyed watching the process and talking to the guys doing the painting.

My daughter went to camp at this rink the week after the painting was done. They were the first to use the new ice.

The things you wind up learning in this forum.......lol. I have to admit that the question of how markings got on hockey rinks is one which never occurred to me before, but it's interesting. Nice shots, and always nice to learn something new.

Ok, this subject is not finished, yet! What kind of paint do they use? I don't think latex or acrylic would work since they are water based. Oil based paints wouldn't stick. So...what do they use?

Also, I would think the first pass of the Zamboni would destroy the paint work. Do they use a hose and spray some water over it first?
