Highways: Mamalahoa Highway, Hawaii
The Mamalahoa Trail built during 19th century circled much of the Big island of Hawaii. As you can see it was paved with volcanic lava stones and was the major road (Think the ancient Roman Iter) between many of the villages.

Not exactly what I think of as a highway! It's amazing that it is in such good condition, do they actively maintain it? Does anyone use it now? I would think it would make a fun hike.

Still, I wouldn't want to do it barefoot.

MtnGal, Walter,
Thanks for your kind comments.
There is a modern asphalt Highway that closely follows this pathway at times and it is sometimes referred to as Mamalahoa to honor this original trail.
Walter the Hawaiians traversed these pathways thru the open lava fields at times barefooted but did use coverings for their feet made from local fibrous plants which provided a degree of protection.
