Default Red and Green: The Hawaiian Ama'u Fern

The Ama'u fern (Sadleria cyatheoides) is native to Hawaii and the fronds have the unusual characteristic of starting out red in color then as they mature convert to the normal green shades of ferns that are commonly seen. It is believed that the red color protects the young leaves from harsh sunlight. Like other ferns that had trunks with a starchy core they were eaten during times of famine by the native Hawaiians.

That almost looks like one of those carnivorous plants you hear about. Most unusual.
