I played with levels for each of these in Gimp; I don't know if that counts as cheating or not.

wow.....nice example...even with levels "cheating"

is that the same shot, with the levels adjustments?

can i see the original? or is the second the original?

anyways, nice shots! i was wondering..how did you light the second one? did you have something to rest your head on for longer shutter? flash? just bright lights around your eyes?

thanks a bunch! i REALLY want to get some nice eye shots (my eyes, i'm told, are pretty good looking...lol) but i'd rather not blind myself....i've heard of deaf musicians...but i dunno about blind photographers :-\

They're not the same shots - I don't know that you can really do a good set of high/low key with the same lighting conditions. I lit the second one with a flashlight from below, for the spooky campfire effect :-)

As far as tecnique for eye shots goes, I measured how far my eye was from the back of my head; I used manual focus to get that spot in focus the same distance from a wall. Then just stand flat against the wall, raising the tripod to eye-level. Hit the timer release, let it count to 10, and stare right into the lens (about 8 inches from my eye at that point).

The first one actually is a bit of a soft-focus unintentionally, but I don't think it hurts the shot any.
