Caught this Delta MD83 on final to Detroit Metropolitan Airport yesterday from Lower Huron Metropark. The "contrails" at the flap edges form inside vortices where high-pressure air spills around the flap edges to the low-pressure area behind and above the flap--but they look a bit like the lines cartoonists draw to show something's moving.

You're right - they do look like "motion lines!" My husband likes to go outside and count the jet trails in the sky from time to time. He likes to think about who's on what plane, where they're going (and how fast), and marvel how those cris-crossed lines are never signs of a collision. I guess it's his meditation! :-)

PS - welcome to the challenge forum!
