I caught this just in time between heavy showers in our garden this afternoon. The stump is the remains of a huge Cupressus, which grew to dominate the garden and whose roots were destroying our sewage system. I wanted to shorten it, but the professionals told me to remove it.

The two scenic saplings, planted this weekend by my wife, are said to grow to not more than 9 feet or so. The stone lady doesn't seem too sure whether it was a good idea.

Alan, this is such a poignant photo with the statue mourning over the remains. It's always a treat to see a picture such as this is with more than one level of meaning.
