This past Sunday, my wife and I were out looking for houseboat communities on the Columbia River. There are several near the PDX Portland International Airport. While shooting pictures of blossoms of an interesting tree on Hayden Island about a mile west of the PDX airport, we quickly realized we were right on the departure path for planes departing PDX westbound. Since I had my 80-300mm lens on the camera, I pointed it skyward. Here are some of the results.

Nikon D100, Nikon 80-300mm lens, ISO200, HANDHELD!

1/1000th at f5.6. Fully zoomed to 300mm

1/1000th at f5.6. Fully zoomed to 300mm

Two more in next post.

Great job capturing these jet planes, Cal. The images look very sharp. Did you also have a tripod with you or these were handheld?

I am very impressed with the clarity of your handheld pictures.

One thing that strikes me as odd...don't those wings look kind of small? Makes methink twice about flying.
