So here's my little sob story. I recently got back from an amazing backpacking trip through the Grand Canyon. A perfect place to go to get away from society and relax in the comfort of some of the most beautiful landscapes ever. Knowing this I brought along our Canon Powershot SD500 that I had purchased for my girlfriend to take on a trip to Europe last fall.

Everything was going great until I knelt down to grab something on the trail and I heard a small "pop". I then realized the camera was in my pocket. I pulled it out and turned it on and as luck would have it, the camera turned on but the LCD screen was white with a black and purple crack through it.

I thought I had completely broken the camers until I got home and realized that the pictures I took after the accident came out just fine. (Aside from not being able to use any of the few manual settings the camera posesses)

I called Canon to find out if I could buy a replacement screen and to see if they have any authorized repair shops in the Los Angeles area. Canon said they will sell me a new LCD screen for just over $30 but I would have to send the camera with the new screen to Illinois (their only Authorized repair shop in the States) and that there will be a minimum of a $100 charge to do the repair.

So after this long (not so necessary) story ... has anyone out there opened up their SD500 to replace the LCD screen? Is it easy enough to remove and replace it? Should I try it myself or bring it to a local shop and hope for the best?

All comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So I just wanted to start this off by giving a great big Thank You to Bayoubooger for the link to those incredible instructions for fixing my LCD screen. Ad it only cost me a little over $40 and about two hours of my time. Not all of the instuctions were exact for the sd500, but I e-mailed Andy and let him know what was different. I just want to say that I am so happy to know there is such an informed panel of people here on this forum. Thank you all for being so kind!! Michael
