9 point AF on S series, A80 but single point on G3/5? Why?

I've been looking at the G3 and G5 cameras. The AF system seems pretty unsophisticated compared to lower end models.

The A60/A70 has 5 point AF, the A80 and S series has 9 point AF. The G3 and G5 are single point center focus than can be manually offset. I know the G series are "less point and shoot" than the lower models, but I can't see why they dont use the multi point AF of the other models. Those models can be set to center AF if desired.

Anyone have an explanation for this?

When in PAMS modes you can press the SET button and then use the 4-way selector to choose the desired focus point, by default it uses the center point. There are many, many available focus points to chose from.

taken straight from steves review of the g5:)
