A80 & CF Write Speed - Benchmark Challenge!

Am about to go with a new A80.

After discovering the fast (65x) SanDisk Ultra II CF cards, I was curious about what the write speed of the A80 was limited too.

I contacted Canon tech support, who promptly gave me this reply:

"The write speed of the camera is limited by the drive inside the camera. Using a faster card rated at 12x or 24x speed may not perform any faster than a slower rated card."

Does anyone have any experience in benchmarks for old (ie. slow) CF cards, vs new (faster) ones in an A80?

Perhaps the only way to do this benchmark would be use highest file size (2MB) on a standard speed CF card, then video the upper indicator when blinking green (blinks green while CF is being written to) - only accurate to 1/25 of a sec tho - then work out MB/sec, then work out the CF speed multiplier (150KB/sec = 1X). Repeat for a fast card.

Am especially curious about whether a fast card would improve frame rate results in continuous shooting mode.

Any takers? Results/thoughts appreciated!

Very loose experiment:
I have an A-70 and a Sandisk Ultra-II 256M CF card (9MB/sec write speed, claimed). In burst-mode with the mfr-supplied 16M card, the camera will take 3 frames at ~ 2fps and then slows down to ~ a couple of seconds per frame. With the Sandisk card it will take 10 frames before it slows down. Of course this was done with differing card sizes as well as write speeds...

Thanks Jeff,

Was this with or without waiting for the flash re-charge?

That test was without flash.
