I don't have the camera but it seems obvious from the instructions that when you push the "Set" button in MF " The camera focuses automatically". The FZ series does the same thing when you push the MF button down to its spring loaded forced focus position. I'm guessing that by using MF first the camera searches in a more limited range assuming you got it close. The FZ doesn't do that – it goes through the full range looking for focus just as if it were in auto.

Yeah... I think that's what the camera does. When you use manual focus, you can focus to a particular distance (roughly) and then when you press SET, I think it searches close to that manual distance. Since the manual focus sucks (distance indicator is very crude and enlarged focusing picture is pixellated), it's hard to say what is exactly happening but I think that's how it works...
