Got my S230 this week, my first digicam. Love the features and compactness. Pretty close to an ideal pocket camera (though 4-5 mg pixels and 3x zoom would be nicer.)
But I can't use my mini-slave flash for side or back fill because of the double flash feature of the S230. On my Canon and Pentax film cameras I've gotten in the habit of using a mini-slave flash to prevent the cardboard-cut-out look of the single on-axis built-in flash. I either bounce the mini slave on the ceiling, illuminate the background or place 90 degrees from the side, giving me a less harsh picture. The S230 double flashes (with the first flash calibrating the scene for the main flash.) But the first, non-exposure flash sets off my slave before the exposure has begun. Using my slave actually underexposes the picture - I'm guessing the slave flash is fooling the S230 flash sensor, which interprets the slave flash as the pre-flash. Anybody know if the pre-flash can be defeated? |
