macro mode of 10cm???

does look like a 'roundish' version of the G3... except with better zoom, slower lens (than G3), 0.3" smaller of a LCD screen, and uses 4x AA batteries rather than Li-ion.

looks like the ideal camera for starters.

I have heard that there is no hot shoe on the Canon S1 IS!
What reason could Canon have to make an advanced and expensiv camera for outdoor use only (unless you do not mind red eyes)?

there are ways to get rid of red eye that don't involve a seperate flash. My boss demonstrated to someone once that you can help just by holding the camera up above and shooting down at someone instead of shooting at eye level to help. not far above, mind you, just a little. the angle supposedly helps, but I haven't tried it myself.

I'm sure that you can also tell people not to look right at the lense, which might help. I have one friend who consistently has red-eye with all cameras I've used to shoot him, and it's probably because he stares right at the lense. Most of my other friends don't have the red eye problem.

I have the Canon A80 now and will probably get the S1 when it's available.

I will wait for the upgraded version "S2" which hopefully will have a hot shoe and perhaps 4 Megapixel CCD. In the hot shoe I will put a Soligor DG-340 DZ with AF illumination. This flash is made for Canon cameras.

I do want to be able to take god indoor pictures.

I agree on the lack of a hot shoe. Very disappointing. I've had plenty of red eye shots when the subject was not looking at the camera.

Please refer to the following string for a suggestion on the red eye issue: http://www.stevesforums.com/phpBB2/v...ic.php?t=21075

S1 looks great

I would prefer it to be 4 megapixel, but since the difference is very little I might as well get this on April instead of waiting for the S2 which is not sure to be coming out.

I don't need the hotshoe, and what makes me want this is the IS for the long zoom and the AA battery and also the use of CF card that I already have.

I wonder if this performs well in low light situation without the use of a tripod.
