Canon s40

Some advice for a newbie. I have had this camera for a whioe now and I am very pleased. My question is what setting should it be on to take pictures when it is dark, but the subject has plenty of light? For example I was at the circus last week and it was dark inside the arena but there were light down on the rings. If I do not use a flash the camera gives me the camera shaky icon and the pics turn out very blurry. Any suggestions are appreciated.

The problem is that the camera is metering off of the darkened areas. I suggest using the spot metering function so that it only takes the center area into account when determining exposure. You could also try ae bracketing and experimenting with manual settings in order to get properly exposed pictures.

Flash

Is it necessary to use the flash in these cases?

No, the flash is unnecessary.
