The S45 is considered a higher end point and shoot that should give you more control and better quality than the A80. I haven't researched the A80 specifically, so I can't give you details. I'm not sure what features the S45 has that the A80 does not, but i have an S40 and use stuff like exposure bracketing, different metering modes, exposure compensation, and manually setting exposure time.

I'm also on the same question.
The a80 and the s45 both have 4 mp and 3x zoom and both have a big choice of manual settings... Wondering which of them offers the best picture quality... I know that the s45 = prop batteries, which is a cons for it I know that the a80 got a small 1.5 lcd, which is a cons for it. But on the quality image side, I really don't know and maybe people here can answer.... ![]() we need more opinions ![]() After reading some reviews, both are good cameras but we always want the best for our money, right ? ![]() |

Anyways, other than a few differences concerning the lcd screen, dimensions, batteries and type of memory use (''physical differences''), I can't see a difference between those two concerning image quality... |

I can't speak on quality, but I read that the CCD on the A80 is the same as the S45. They both have the same lens aperture, but the A80 has a slightly longer focal length (35 to 114) vs. (35-105). So I imagine the quality would be pretty similar.
Both cameras have roughly the same manual control options though the S45 has exposure bracketing. And the S45 has the ability to capture in RAW format. The A80 has the swivel LCD (huge reason for my purchase) as well as the ability to accept accessory lenses. And for me, the ability to use non-propriety batteries was the other main reason for my purchase over the S45/S50. I wonder if it would be possible for Canon to release a firmware update to include RAW capture, and maybe exposure bracketing? Seems possible to add those features with a firmware update to the camera's programming. |

I had almost the same dilemma, I tried to choose between the s50 and the A80. The s50 is almost exactly the same as the s45, besides the 1MP sensor upgrade.
I went with the A80, because of the 4MP sensor being better for the lens (the s45, the s50 and the A80 uses the same). I've read a lot of reviews and apparently the image quality of the s45 and a80 is practically the same. I also chose the A80 because of the swiveling LCD, It's just great, and I'll propably not buy another camera without it. Also the A80's superior battery life made the choice all the easier. "Using four AAs adds weight but pays off in battery life. Our 1,850mAh nickel-metal-hydride rechargeables lasted for a whopping 933 photos, with no false alarms from the low-battery warning. That came on after 900 shots, so we had a decent grace period for swapping." http://reviews.cnet.com/Canon_PowerS...tml?tag=review I can live without the RAW format, so for the price, the A80 is a terrific camera, and I don't regret my choice.
