Default Canon SX 30 IS viewfinder problem

I just bought a Canon SX30 IS and like the camera very much. However (and it is a big "however"), the viewfinder doesn't seem to work well for me. When I look through the viewfinder, the image I see is blurred and out of focus. When I put my reading glasses on and look through the viewfinder, the image is still blurred and out of focus. The only way I can see a focused image is to physically hold the camera away from my face by 12-15 inches. This is not ideal, especially in trying to use the camera in bright light.

I have a Nikon Coolpix and have absolutely no problem using its viewfinder, with or without glasses. Are the viewfinders built differently? (Pardon my ignorance!) Before buying the Canon, I read several reviews but none of them mentioned any problem with the viewfinders, which makes me think either the reviewers don't use reading glasses (and so didn't notice the problem) or maybe this is a problem only with the camera I happened to purchase.

Any comments would be appreciated, as I have only until Saturday to decide whether to keep or to return the camera. Thanks in advance!

What happens when you adjust the diopter dial to the left of the viewfinder?
