Default G2 Autofocus

Does anyone understand how this system works? I have a Tiffen Wide Angle lense mounted that blocks the A/F Auxillary Light however the autofocus still seems to function. Does the system actually operate via the lense?

While I'm not positive as to 'how' AF works it does work by looking at the image through the lens. The system uses phase shifts in the light reflected off the object to determine focus. It isn't using the light to determine distance like a laser rangefinder.

The auxillary light provides illumination on the subject for the AF system to work. If you block the AF assist light all that will occur is that the camera will hunt for focus in dark conditions or on objects without a lot of contrast.

A trick I use with my G2 is to 'aim' the camera with the AF light when I'm shooting kids with the camera at waist level. Looking at the LCD would work but then I can't keep an eye on the kids.
