I'm looking at buying a new pocket digital camera that will double as a webcam. From reading the specs on many cameras, it's not clear if any of them can output live video as opposed to video recorded on the memory card.

I have a Pentax Optio that I tried doing this with, but as soon as the USB cable is attached to the camera, the lens retracts and it goes into playback mode. Live video isn't possible.

Looking at the S70's specs, it does do NTSC video which I hope to feed into my PC's video capture card, but it's still not clear if this is live camera videoor an NTSC feed of the stills and/or video stored on the memory card.

Does anyone out there have any idea how the spec sheets are written and if the S70 is capable of live video?

Thanks in advance.

Canon's website

Computer Interface: Universal Serial Bus (USB) mini-B
Video Out: NTSC or PAL
Audio Out: Monaural

According to the specs on that camera, you should be able to. It has a video out jack, so as long as you have a composite-in jack for your computer (probably on your video card), you'll be able to use it as a webcam. I don't know if you can also use it as a microphone though. Depends on whether or not the camera feeds that directly into the audio out.
