Has anyone been able to compare the picture quality including sharpness and all of the S2 compared to the G6? Granted, the G6 is going to be better, but any idea but how much and how noticeable is it?

This is a very Unfair comparison:

When S1IS came out is was told it had IQ (and perhaps same CCD) as Canon A70 !!!

Ultrazooms (Canon, Panasonic, and others) can hardly have comparable Image quality to these compact cams with 3-4x zoom, especially with G6 which is a 7 Megapixels cam (and even if it was 5 Mp, its IQ would be better).

UZ suffer more of weak dynamic range management: when the scene has both dark shadows and bright skies, they tend to burn the clouds, wash out the sky or underexpose the dark grounds/trees.
In this respect the Canon A70 is far better than S2 and FZ20 !!!

On the other hand, a 12x zoom, despite the IQ and the Lens quality (which is not even close to a dSLR one) is cheap and fine, and can give great satisfactions to the owners...

The best thing to do IMO is having 2 cams:

- One UZ like S2IS, FZ20 or FZ5 to be paired with:

- a 300-350D or 20/60D, or Nikon D50/70
or with a
- Canon A/S/G series compact cam

I can get a G6 and a 1GB memory card for the same price as a S2. I was pretty sure I want the S2, until I read this reply.....
