Recently my A75 has made a grinding noise when I:
zoom in and out
turn the camera on or off

why is this? is it breaking?!

many times the focus mechanism of the newer canons seems to have a grinding noise that is heard when the camera is powered on and off and during zooming (just like you described.) i would not be concerned with this, but if you are still unsure, it is very easy for someone who deals with the cameras on a daily basis to determine if your noise is worth worring about. i work at an electronics store and almost all of the new canons make the same noise and i havent seen a single one come back because of a grinding issue (not focusing/no zooming ability) as i have seen before in kodak and fuji's lower end cameras.

Do not worry... I get it also on my S1 IS when slow zooming in and out. Someone on another forum told me that this is not a thing that could aggravate, so will have to live with it. It's a problem when shooting movies... but I'm more in still's than in movies, at least with a photocam.

Me too I got this grindingnoise now on my A60 , i'm still afraid because

I already took 5200 pictures since the camerais new , maybe my mechanism is soon to be broken ??? (I turn the camera on and off often between photo shoot)

I made the mistake myself and took the camera to Canon repair center to fix the grinding noise. Instead of fixing the camera,they scratchedits body.
