I read that saving an image in raw format is better because the data that come out from the sensor are saved without being treated in any way.
In a few words their are like a negative. If this is true why the IXUS cannot save in this format? Is a political choise or it could be changed in some way? Thanks. |

Yes saving an image in RAW format is better, and is exactly what comes out of the CCD.
It is true, the IXUS cannot save in RAW format, only JPG, which is a post processed image, then stored in a compressed format JPG. On the IXUS, you can control how the image is processed before saving into JPG in the Picture effects menu. Options like Vivid, low shapening, and neutral are useful in some circumstances. Only high end digital cameras, like SLR Digicams will save in RAW uncompressed format. Some digicams allow TIFF save format, which is a post processed image, but stored in TIFF format with no compression. IXUS cannot save in TIFF either. One believes that Canon choose not to have RAW or TIFF purely due to the fact that IXUS is not a professional photo camera, rather a fun high quality compact camera where JPG quality loss is neglible. I choose this camera against the s45 (same price) just because of the dimensions but I was angry about the raw format missing.
As much as I understand if the programmers want they could give you the chance to save in raw without any problems . I hope a new firmware comes out ... and maybe someone will modify it ;-) Thanks a lot for the answer. |
