Default SX40 AF area size....

Despite using centre area AF to target little birds on branches- I found the camera focusing on other things nearby- or behind- the birds, missing many shots.
However, reducing the AF area size to small cured this problem- meaning I can now target little things in tight areas...
This little chap would have been a struggle before...!

Me too been in this problem some time.
Its very good tip as shooting birds you might have only 1-2 chance to get correct focus and composition.
Thanks for the tip.
A nice camera can take nice picture is like saying nice guitar plays good music.

I've had this problem and found changing the AF area size didn't seem to help much. This also happens a lot when taking macro shots when the subject almost fills the screen. The camera quite often focuses on what little background there is or produces an out of focus shot even though it is set on the macro setting.
